The mastering process has garnered a bit of a mysterious reputation, perhaps because of its somewhat subtle and artistic nature. During mastering, the engineer and the artist give the music its final shape.

The following is a list of the main components of this process.

1. The final stereo mix is shaped, primarily through the use of equalization and compression, and enhanced through various methods in order to provide the ultimate "sweetness" or "warmth" desired in the recording.

2. Levels of all songs are made consistent relative to one another.

3. Transistions between songs are adjusted and finalized.

4. Sound is raised to its maximum and optimum level for playback.
